Maltese Dog Breed

The Maltese is a small breed of dog in the toy group, known for its silky white hair, though many owners of pet Maltese give them a short "puppy cut" for ease of grooming.

The breed name appears to refer to the Mediterranean island of Malta, however the origins of both the breed and its name are unclear. The name is sometimes described as deriving from the Adriatic island of Méléda, or the defunct Sicilian town of Melita.

This breed is considered one of the most cat-like of the dog breeds in attitude: it is alert, intelligent, and independent, and it uses its paws to wash and wipe its face.

Dachshund Dog Breed

The dachshund is a short-legged, elongated dog breed, of the hound family. The standard size was developed to scent, chase, and flush badgers and other burrow-dwelling animals, while the miniature was developed to hunt smaller prey, like rabbits.

The name "dachshund" is of German origin and literally means "badger dog", from Dachs ("badger") and Hund ("dog").

The typical dachshund is long-bodied and muscular, with short and stubby legs. Its paws are unusually large and paddle-shaped, for efficient digging. It has skin that is loose enough not to tear while tunneling in tight burrows to chase prey. The dachshund has a deep chest to allow enough lung capacity to keep going when hunting. Its snout is long with an increased nose area that absorbs odors.

Chinese Crested Dog Breed

Checkout this adorable little collection of super cute Chinese Crested dogs.

Although hairless dogs have been found in many places in the world, it is unlikely that the origins of the modern Chinese Crested are in China. In the 1920s, Debora Wood created the "Crest Haven" kennel and began to purposefully breed and record the lineages of her Chinese Crested dogs. Crest Haven dogs were the true foundation of every Chinese Crested alive today. Ms. Wood also founded the American Hairless Dog Club in 1959, which was eventually incorporated into the American Chinese Crested Club (ACCC) in 1978. The ACCC became the U.S. parent club for the breed when the Chinese Crested was recognized by the American Kennel Club thirteen years later, in 1991.

The Chinese Crested was officially recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale in 1987, by The Kennel Club (UK) in 1981, by the American Kennel Club in 1991, and by the Australian National Kennel Council in 1995.

Did you know? The Chinese Crested breed, either in purebred form or as a hybrid with chihuahua, has won eight World's Ugliest Dog Contests.

Chihuahua Toy Dog Breed

Here we have some photos of perhaps the most popular of all the toy dog breeds, the Chihuahua.

Being naturally territorial and protective, Chihuahuas can be easily provoked to attack, and are therefore generally unsuitable for homes with small children, but not in all cases. The AKC describes the breed as, "A graceful, alert, swift-moving little dog with saucy expression, compact, and with terrier-like qualities of temperament." The breed tends to be fiercely loyal to one particular owner, but may be attached to more. They do not always get along with other breeds. These traits generally make them unsuitable for households with small or boisterous children.
